Introduction to Portflow
Last updated: July 29, 2026
What is Portflow?
Portflow is the student-owned learning & assessment portfolio. It provides learners with a place where they can own the narrative of their entire personal learning journey, while it offers institutions a holistic approach to assessment for learning that simultaneously empowers learners to develop agency.
How does one work with Portflow?
Working with Portflow can be divided into 4 steps: plan, learn, track and prove.
Plan: Build and Organise
In Portflow, you can structure and organise your work using Collections, Sections, Goals, and Activities.
Collections are used to represent a learning contexts (e.g. courses, modules, projects, or internships). Collections appear on the Portfolio home page & can be organised using Sections.

Within Collections, Activities tell the story of the learning journey of the student in that context; both for planned and past learning experiences.

Goals provide the secondary independent perspective on the learning journey and represent anything the learner is working towards (e.g. learning outcomes, objectives, competencies, skills, or attributes).

Using Templates, these components can be scaffolded to help learners structure (parts of) their Portfolio.

Learn: Collect, Share, Engage with Evidence & Feedback
Evidence can be uploaded and created directly to Portflow. Submitted assignments in Canvas or Brightspace can also be included as Evidence, including the authentic feedback and rubrics from the assignment. In addition, files can be uploaded and URLs to external materials or videos can be added directly to the portfolio. Evidence can also be created in Portflow with Free text that can be scaffolded using Snippets.

Evidence can be linked to multiple Collections and Goals. In addition, it is possible to add descriptions and reflections to a Collection or individual pieces of Evidence.

Share access and collect Feedback
Learners can share access to their Portfolio, Collection(s), or Evidence with any other LMS User and External User. Invitees can contribute insights to the Portfolio through Feedback or Progress Reviews.

Track: Monitor Growth and Progress
Learners and Coaches can track progress and growth in various visualisations and aggregated overviews and analyses of received Feedback. Moreover, the Coaching Dashboard provides an overview of learner activity and progress across a group of Learners.

Prove: Assessment, Showcasing & Alumni access
The learner can make a curated selection from their development Portfolio in a Snapshot: a locked/frozen, copied version of the portfolio. This Snapshot can be used for (summative) assessment or showcasing purposes. It can be submitted in an LMS assignment or other grading tool for (seamless) assessment and grading. The Snapshot can also be used for showcasing purposes (e.g. public access, job/internship applications). While the learner continues working in their live development Portfolio, the Snapshot remains a frozen in time selection of their Portfolio.
